Institute publishes Annual Report highlighting 2023 impact, accomplishments

The National Press Club Journalism Institute strengthened its impact in Washington, D.C., and beyond through its virtual and in-person programming, daily newsletter, and opportunities for career support and skill-building in 2023.

In a year marked by an ever-changing media landscape, the rise of AI and disinformation tactics, and press freedom challenges, the Institute was a go-to resource for 9,443 journalists and communicators, as outlined in its 2023 Annual Report, released Monday on its website.

The report includes:

  • A look at the Institute’s 17 public-facing training programs held in 2023, including an in-person event for freelancers;
  • Highlights from The Latest, the Institute’s daily industry and craft newsletter thats serves over 4,800 subscriber journalists and media leaders;
  • A review of joint press freedom initiatives with the National Press Club;
  • A thank you to the generous donors and sponsors who made the Institute’s work and special events possible; and
  • A summary of revenue and expenses.

The Institute went through a leadership and operational transition in 2023. Under Executive Director Beth Francesco, appointed in April 2023, the Institute doubled its staff to four employees and capacity to both serve new audiences while focusing on financial sustainability.

The report highlights how the Institute grew its reach by 25 percent over the previous year while aligning its activities to its mission — to promote an engaged global citizenry through an independent and free press, and to equip journalists with skills and standards to inform the public in ways that inspire a more representative democracy. As the nonprofit affiliate of the National Press Club, the Institute powers journalism in the public interest.

The report is available for download here.
