The National Press Club Journalism Institute hires press freedom program coordinator

The National Press Club Journalism Institute has welcomed Devin Windelspecht as its press freedom program coordinator.

In his role at the Institute, Windelspecht will help coordinate and grow press freedom-related programming; support initiatives that equip journalists with the tools and resources they need to navigate legal, safety, and access challenges; and administer emergency assistance programs.

“Having worked with journalists from around the world, I know that press freedom is an issue that is global in scope – and that U.S. journalists have much to learn from our colleagues who have faced similar struggles overseas,” Windelspecht said. “At the Institute, I’m looking to use this global perspective to inform new strategies to meet today’s press freedom moment here in the United States.”

Windelspecht brings a commitment to advancing press freedom, grounded in both newsroom experience and global reporting. Prior to joining the Institute, he served as editorial and community manager for the International Journalists’ Network, where he supported a global community of reporters with practical resources, reporting techniques, and guidance on covering complex and often dangerous stories.

As a journalist, Windelspecht has reported on press freedom, exiled journalism, and democracy across the United States, Middle East, Latin America and Europe. He brings a nuanced, international perspective to the challenges facing journalists today.

“We’re excited to have Devin join our team at such an important time,” said Beth Francesco, executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute. “He brings both real-world reporting experience and a global perspective that will contribute to how we support journalists navigating increasingly complex environments.”

Windelspecht holds a master’s degree from SOAS University of London and a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University.
