The National Press Club Journalism Institute is currently recruiting candidates for its paid summer internship program in Washington, D.C.
Interns will have the opportunity to gain a tailored, hands-on experience in reporting, interviewing, and supporting the Institute’s mission to power journalism in the public interest and champion press freedom. Previous internship or writing experience in journalism, media, or communications is a plus.
Interested candidates should submit a resume, a cover letter outlining their journalism or communication experience and interest in the National Press Club Journalism Institute, and up to three work samples (ie: news articles, interviews, reports, class projects) using this form.
The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. ET, Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Interns will gain a variety of experience, including reporting on the journalism industry, assisting in creating valuable training resources, reporting on NPCJI events, and supporting the Institute’s press freedom initiatives. They’ll also gain firsthand access to learning and mentorship from experienced reporters and media professionals.
Interns interested in journalism, strategic communication, social media management, marketing or adjacent experience are welcome to apply.
Qualified applicants must:
- be a college junior or senior pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Graduating seniors will be considered;
- live in or near Washington, D.C. and able to secure their own housing;
- have a strong interest in journalism, media, and storytelling;
- have excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- have an ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with social media platforms and Canva or other design tools;
- and have knowledge of AP style, with an interest in developing writing and reporting skills.
